Meet Shan

A boarder at Woodbridge School for three years, Shan is from Hong Kong and is currently in Year 12 at our Sixth Form studying A levels in Economics, Physics and Maths.

Shan is a talented Football player and benefits from the Football Programme at Woodbridge. Despite currently being injured, Shan has access to sports therapy and rehabilitation, to ensure he can return to the game safely.

Programme

Our Football Programme has been developed to meet the needs and objectives of students who have a love for Football and a desire to play at a higher level or pursue a career within the wider industry.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)

Each player on the Football Programme is given an IDP (Individual Development Plan) which is developed by both the student and the School coaching staff.

1:1 and Small Group Sessions

Every week students take part in 1:1 and small group sessions. These sessions focus mainly on technical ability alongside IDPs, and the small group sessions tend to be position specific; guest coaches often visit to deliver these.

Strength and Conditioning

Each performance programme student is given a Strength and Conditioning programme to work towards that is tailored to their individual needs. This not only helps to reduce the risk of injury but also prepares students to be able to compete to the best of their ability.

Development and Mentoring

Every student that is a part of the performance programme is assigned a mentor from the Sports department. This mentor is there to help them with any issues they may face both within their sport and in School.

Video Analysis and Sharing

Each game students take part in is recorded, which enables students and parents to keep a record of what they have done over their time at the School. Video analysis is hugely important as it can help a player with tactical and technical understanding.

Health and Nutrition Guidance

Workshops are held in School with a professional sports nutritionist, who gives advice and helps with ensuring young athletes adhere to the correct nutrition guidance for their age group, to optimise performance.

Links to Academies and Clubs

We have links into professional game academies along with a relationship with Woodbridge Town FC, which acts as an opportunity for students to gain experience playing and training outside of School. We also work with United States Sport Scholarships who help with finding scholarships in America.

Pathways to the Future

Through our professional and local links, we are able to provide insight and pathways to representative football, future education – including scholarships – as well as a range of different careers in the game.

Guest Speakers

We have a sports psychologist who comes into School on a regular basis to assist students with techniques to help them build a strong mentality, as well as overcome hurdles when faced with them.

Meet the staff

Jonny Klug, Head of Football

An experienced youth Football coach, Jonny has worked in UK schools and clubs as well as overseas; most recently in Australia.

An UEFA B Licenced coach, he has also achieved this Talent ID Level 2 as well as a number of Youth Awards in Football.

Having played and been around football throughout his life, particularly during his time at Ipswich Town Football Club where he worked alongside coaches and professionals with vast experience, he is passionate about this and all other sports, understanding the benefits, both physical and mental.

Ralph Pruden (Head of Sport, Fitness and Health)

Having worked as a PE teacher all his career, Ralph’s BSC Honors PGCE in Secondary PE from De Montfort University in Bedford enabled him to begin his career at Farlingaye as a PE teacher, before moving on to Cornard Middle School as Head of PE as well as Head of Year.

A Junior Rugby coach for Woodbridge Warriors, Ralph also managed Suffolk Schools Girls Football for a decade before becoming Women’s Manager at Ipswich Town Football Club and being appointed as Head of Education there.

Having helped set up and integrate the relationship between the football club and the football programme at St Joseph’s College, Ralph moved to direct football within the independent school based in Ipswich, where he developed and managed the school’s football programme for students, including establishing the nationally recognised provision for girls.
