Busy Boarders – First Half of Term Roundup from Mr Gunn, Oct 2026

As we reach the half-term point, it is a good opportunity to reflect on a busy and successful start to the year for our boarders. It has been wonderful to welcome new boarders into our community and to see how quickly they have settled into School and boarding life. The positive atmosphere across the houses, the friendships that have been formed and the willingness of students to embrace new experiences have all helped make this an excellent start to the academic year. Our Head of Boarding, Mr Gunn shares more from and about our boarders.

Our Welcome Week programme provided new and returning boarders with a great start to term. From bowling and trips to the coast to learning the routines of boarding life, students had plenty of opportunities to build friendships and gain confidence in their new environment. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another and establishing the strong sense of community that is such an important part of boarding.

Boarder breakfasts

Over the last few weeks, boarders have enjoyed a series of opportunities to connect with staff and reflect on their experiences. Our Head, Miss Norman, regularly enjoys breakfast with boarders, meeting with both new and returning students to catch up, answer questions and make sure everyone is settling in well. Joined by their Head of Year too, these breakfasts provide an informal setting in which to discuss how the term is progressing, and ensuring every boarder feels supported.

Exploring and having fun!

A particular highlight was our paintball trip to Thetford Forest. The day was full of excitement, teamwork and friendly competition, with students from different year groups working together and enjoying the challenges on offer. It was a fantastic opportunity for boarders to spend time together away from School. Boarders also enjoyed a cultural visit to Cambridge, including punting on the River Cam and exploring the city’s rich history. The trip gave students a chance to experience one of the UK’s most famous university cities while spending time together in a relaxed setting.

Another popular trip was our visit to Jimmy’s Farm. Students enjoyed seeing a range of animals, with the Polar Bears proving a particular favourite. The visit provided a fun and memorable day out and another chance for boarders to strengthen friendships outside of their normal routines.

Sporty boarders

Our Sporty Weekend competition has generated excellent enthusiasm so far. With Football, Tennis, Dodgeball and a variety of other events taking place, students have been competing hard for team points. The competition remains very close, and there is still everything to play for in the second half of the term.

The first half of term has been filled with opportunities to explore, compete, socialise and develop as a community. I would like to thank our boarders for the energy and positivity they bring to boarding life and look forward to an equally enjoyable and successful second half of term.
