The Junior Hockey teams (Year 7 and 8 players) made us super proud last week! All our players again headed to Harleston Magpies Hockey Club for a six-match block fixture against the strong Norwich School. We faced the first bad weather of the season but that was the only downside of the day, as our teams and players were brilliant, on and off the pitch. Meanwhile, our Senior 1st and 2nd teams hosted Fram College and Ipswich High, both matches ending in thrilling draws. Our reports from each match below hold details of players and highlights.
Woodbridge Junior 1s
A smaller than usual Junior 1st squad provided a brilliant performance! A closely contested 1-1 draw last year, was turned into a seven-goal action packed match this time round, with Woodbridge outshining their Norfolk opponents. Year 8 captain, Issy P, got the match going with a bang, scoring a penalty corner before a minute had gone. Norwich would not be deterred and levelled the scores after the game went end-to-end for some time and both our GK, Year 8’s Chloe, and Norwich’s were called into action multiple times. Woodbridge’s lead was however restored before half time, again courtesy of a goal from Issy.
In the second half Woodbridge was forced to play players out of their usual positions at times, to give everyone a rest in a high tempo and mentally demanding game. The players showed composure and knowledge in doing so. Year 8’s Lily R again impressed while Year 8’s Coco executed every plan and her skills with seamless consistency; she was also rewarded with two well taken close range in goals – classic forward scoring in the 9-yard area. Norwich also got through our final defences once in the second half, but a highlight was Issy completing her hattrick! Well done to this team for a convincing win and tactically and technically outplaying their opponents. Player-of-the-Match went to the hattrick hero, Issy, but again special mention to Coco and Lily R for their impactful play.

Woodbridge Junior 2s
The Junior 2s kept their unbeaten record going, producing an excellent team performance, putting into practice our tactical focus on using width when in possession. This paid off with our opening goal as the ball was worked brilliantly across the pitch, allowing Year 8’s Vivienne to arrive at the far post and finish from close range, being in exactly the right place at the right time.
Our attacking play continued to impress, with Vivienne scoring her second field goal after another flowing move. She completed a superb first-half hat-trick just before the break, giving the team a deserved lead. Defensively, we were solid throughout. Year 8’s Jennah, Year 7’s Sybil and Year 8’s Sophie M were outstanding in bringing the ball confidently out from defence and into attacking areas, helping us transition quickly. Year 7’s Alice ran her socks off from start to finish, while Year 8’s Chloe S showcased her excellent skills down the right-hand side.
Year 8’s Emilia S was a constant threat carrying the ball forward and was rewarded when she drove into attack and delivered a great ball into the circle for Year 8’s Florence to score our fourth goal. Despite the freezing conditions, Year 7’s Ziyu never stopped working and covered every part of the astro. Year 8 GK, Martha was vocal from the back and helped the defence pick up players to finish with a clean sheet.
All the players should be incredibly proud of their efforts, teamwork and determination in an excellent all-round performance.
Woodbridge Junior 3s
The Junior 3s made it three wins from three for Woodbridge on the water pitch. Year 7’s Gabbi and Cleo scored to secure a one-goal win for the team.
Woodbridge Junior 4s
It was another positive result for the Junior 4s against Norwich School. The team took a little time to settle in the damp conditions but soon found their rhythm. Year 7’s Harper and Isobel A both scored excellent first-time goals from passes from the right. Year 8’s Bronte and Year 7’s Delilah were strong in defence, tackling well and distributing effectively, while Year 7’s Bea and Mollie worked tirelessly in midfield. Year 8’s Izzy F’s movement up front helped create attacking opportunities, and although Year 7 GK Anya was not peppered with action in goal, she made some excellent saves and distributed the ball quickly and accurately when needed. A well-deserved win and another strong team performance. Player-of-the-Match went to Isobel. Well done to the 4s for ending their half term unbeaten!

Woodbridge Junior 5s
On the second Magpies’ pitch the Junior 5s played out a thrilling 1-1 draw while the Junior 6s looked like they were cruising to victory in their first match as a team, being two goals ahead with time running out. Then the dreaded ‘2-0 curse’ struck, and Norwich came back to score three unanswered goals to steal the victory. Year 7’s Elsie was the scorer of both our goals while Year 8’s Maizie was named Player-of-the-Match. Well done to this team who learned lots and gained valuable experience for their next match in the first week after half term.

Woodbridge Senior 1st and 2nd teams
The senior 1st and 2nd team hosted Fram College 2nd team (at Woodbridge astro) and Ipwich High School U16 (at Ipswich Hockey Club) respectively. Both matches ended in thrilling draws.
The first team match was not short of action for sure, but didn’t provide any goals, despite each team’s best efforts. Fram College dominated the first half and starved Woodbridge from the ball. The second half saw our team control possession better, play well through midfield, use the defenders for transfers and generally build attacks better. This led to some good chances but the final break through kept evading the team.
Fram College had a period and great momentum in the closing stages, peppering the Woodbridge D for the final four minutes with attack after attack and penalty corners. Massive credit to the defensive effort and unit to not concede. Year 13’s Freya (GK), Bea, Millie and Lyrah were influential in these efforts.
The team rose well in a challenging game facing fast running players! Player-of-the-Match went to Year 11 Tabby for her endless running in attack and effective pressing in defence.

The second team’s draw against Ipswich High featured two goals, ours being scored again by Player-of-the-Match, Year 11’s Eirran. The team should be very proud of their performance and outcome- previous seasons have seen Ipswich High win this game by big margins. This turnaround is reward for the hard work players are doing at training, coming out to practices every week.
Well done and keep it going in the second half of the term.
