Meet Nikolai
Nikolai joined Woodbridge School in Year 10 and is studying A level Computing, Economics and Maths.
The best thing about boarding here at Woodbridge School is the community, we are like one big family – boarders and day students.
One of the reasons I was interested in boarding at Woodbridge School in particular is the School’s Chess credentials, and at the time I was particularly excited to be learning from the School’s previous Head of Chess, Adam Hunt, who sadly passed away recently. However, his excellence in Chess and outstanding reputation caught my attention
I enjoy every day in School, from sharing breakfast together with my fellow boarders, to lessons and activities throughout the School day – but I particularly enjoy the co-curricular activities on offer, I play Football and of course my focus has also been on Chess. As well as taking part in the club, I represent the School regularly in competitions and at tournaments.
I started playing Chess when I was just four years old, and am extremely proud to have achieved almost 1800 FIDE rating, placing me 88-90% above other chess players in terms of skill and accomplishments. I enjoy the entire process of out-thinking my opponent, winning after you’ve made great moves in Chess feels great – far better than winning just because your opponent makes a mistake or a poorly judged move! It is claimed that there are more possible chess positions than atoms in the universe!
If you’re felling apprehensive about coming to board, don’t be! Everyone here is friendly and welcoming, and the boarding house feels like a family home. I’ve been able to improve my confidence as well as my English speaking, it’s been a great experience and I know I’ve made friends for life here.
