The u13B girls continued their good form winning all 4 singles and both doubles matches.  Freya Huxley started the afternoon off well securing the first win, beating her opposite no1 ranked player 6-2.  The rest of the team followed suit, only dropping four games in three singles matches.  Sophie Graham again paired up well with Freya to win the first doubles match.  Saffron Holliday and Annabel Yates were pushed to the wire in an exciting last match but in the end the girls showed good composure under pressure to win the match 7-5.  This was another dominant performance the team can be proud of.

The u13A boys were less successful with only Alex Weir-Simmons managing to score points for Woodbridge by winning his rubber 6-1.  Alex Evans Lombe played an outstanding singles match coming back from 2-5 down to force a tie-break.  The ultimate comeback was not to be and Alex narrowly lost the tie-break.  Alex Hammond made his debut for the u13A team under a baptism of fire but showing that he will be a player to watch in the future.

It was the classic triangular competition: A beat B, B beat C, and C beat A – or in this case Captain Christopher Long led his team of Toby McNally, Nathan Goddard and Maud Peel to convincing victory over Langley, having earlier frustratingly lost to Colchester RGS, only for Colchester then to be defeated by Langley, and yet still sneak the overall victory on points difference.  All in all, it was a very complicated, exciting, and nail-biting way for our team to bow out at this, the regional semi-final stage of the Junior National Schools’ Challenge.  Congratulations nonetheless to the team on its victories.

Alex has been selected twice to play in the Suffolk team; the first time playing at the University of East Anglia against Essex and Norfolk, with the successful Suffolk side winning their matches comfortably. Last weekend he played again for the Suffolk team, this time at his home ground IES at Rushmere against Essex and Herts and Alex scored two brilliant goals. They sadly didn’t manage a win but the team worked hard throughout.

Well done Alex!

Parents Claire Harrington and Joanna Wells would like to extend an invitation to our community to join them at their one-off fundraiser “Party in the Barn” on Sunday 24 May at Joanna’s Hemingstone Hall Barn.

‘We have been very fortunate to have food, drinks and entertainment donated by our friends and local contacts, so all money raised through ticket sales and on the night can go straight to our fund, thereby supporting the Hospice.  We will have live entertainment from local band Force8, disco, hog roast supper, Aspalls cyder on arrival and a donation bar all evening.’

Claire and Joanna are training to cycle from London to Paris in September in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice.  That’s 300 miles in just four days!  They are training in a sub-team of three “Brunettes on Bikes” which is part of the larger Hospice Team 100 group of 100 cyclists.  As the “Brunettes on Bikes” their fundraising target is a whopping £6000.

They thank you all very much for your support – ‘and hope you will be able to join us!’

During the Easter Holidays I was part of an NCO main orchestra course for nine days at Port Regis school in Dorset. We were conducted by Howard Williams and our low brass section was tutored by the amazing David Whitson. Our final concert was at Colston Hall, Bristol. For the foyer concert our low brass section performed three jazz quintets and the whole brass section played ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’. For the main concert we performed Elgar’s ‘Cockaigne’ which was my favourite piece of the concert. We then played Poulene’s Gloria with Bristal Choral Society. It was an amazing experience to play with such a large choir. After that we played Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 and finally Ravel’s Bolero. Overall it was a fantastic week even with so little for the tuba to play!

Fat, thin, high, low

Short, tall, fast, slow

Sorry, scatty, silly, soppy

Merry, happy, jolly, spotty

Black, yellow, brown, white

Sleepy, lively, dim, bright

Look around us and you’ll see

We’re all different – you and me

Him from her, girl from boy

John from Sandeep, Jane from Roy……

The tennis season kicked off with a busy day of fixtures, Woodbridge welcoming 3 different school and 4 teams.

The u13B girls made light work of their opponents from Ipswich High School.  The team of Freya Huxley, Sophie Graham, Saffron Holliday and Annabel Yates played excellent tennis individually and also combined well in their doubles matches.  Woodbridge won 5 of the 6 matches.

The u13B boys beat their opponents from Brandeston Hall.  Charlie Mayhew, Joshua Graves, Oliver Buchanan and Giles Kelleway only dropped 5 games in six sets, dominating the fixture.

It was less easy going for the u13A team but they frustrated a strong Ipswich team.  The result went down to the wire will nail biting doubles matches which could swing the tie either way.  Alex Evans Lombe and John Max lost their enthralling doubles match 6-7 in the end whilst James Martin and Alex Weir-Simmons came back from behind to upset the Ipswich no.1 pairing 7-6.  Woodbridge lost the match by 4 rubbers to 2, making for an exciting afternoon of tennis.

The u15A boys also faced tough opponents from Ipswich School. Their cause was not helped when Adam Wildbore suffered an injury midway through the first doubles match.  Adam showed true character attempting to continue the fixture with a damaged playing hand.  The team of Eden Wigzell, Oliver Bacon, Hugo Kelley and Adam unfortunately came out second best this time, but have gained valuable experience for the rest of the season.

The next fixtures are u13A boys and u13B girls against Orwell Park on Tuesday 28 April.

Please be aware that the fixtures printed in the red book have changed and are no longer correct.

The correct times and venues are:
