Well done to all our budding mathematicians who took part in the Primary Maths Challenge organised by the Mathematical Association. Pupils from Year 4, 5 and 6 tackled the fun, yet challenging, problem solving questions with great enthusiasm and really enjoyed using their maths knowledge and thinking ‘outside the box’. We plan to take part in this competition every year. If you enjoy a challenge and want to try some fun problems and games, look on the Mathematical Association website.
Congratulations to Katie B, Henry D and Amy G who were presented with Gold certificates. Billy G, Molly M and Harvey G achieved Silver and James Y, Thomas L, Mya L, Milo V, Samuel B, Phoebe B, Ella W, Ariane B, Talia F and Rebecca Y were awarded Bronze.
Love in a Box is an exciting idea that gives children in the orphanages of the Ukraine and Moldova, who don’t normally receive Christmas presents a box full of marvellous gifts. Every year pupils at The Abbey and Queen’s House are given a leaflet with ideas of what to put into the box and an option of what age they would like to send gifts to. This year a total of 103 boxes have been given in and as we speak they are being loaded onto lorries to start their journey abroad. An example of items you can put in the box are toiletries, stationery, toys, sweets, hats and gloves. I think Love in a Box is an amazing idea that gives under privileged children a Happy Christmas.

The Reception children took part in their first Harvest Festival last week. As the service began they carried their fruits and vegetables into chapel to present to Reverend Wilson. The chapel was well attended with parents, grandparents and siblings all joining in. The children particularly enjoyed singing “Oats and Beans” with accompanying actions.
At the festival we raised a fantastic £315.54. The good news is that it will be doubled by the UK government as part of their Hunger Stops Here Appeal, this means our donation will make twice the impact for helping to stop hunger! We therefore raised the grand total of £631.08.

Our Year 6 pupils have just come back from an amazing journey through time – back to the Victorian era. They were servants for the day at Audley End House. They were taught how to do the laundry, lay the table and even iron the newspaper. Perhaps they can try out these new found skills at home!
Our first match was against Old Buckenham Hall where we drew 1-1 (Tom Martin). Our second game was against the hosts (New Hall) we won 1-0 with a try from Tom Bradley. We finished off our group with a 2-0 loss to the eventual winners Colet Court.
We progressed to the third place competition. In our semi-final we played Loyola Prep, and The Abbey team was required to defend really well in the first half; in the second half it was the Abbey’s turn to apply the pressure and we eventually scored with a try from Freddie S.
In the final we were up against Felstead. After a tight first half, The Abbey scored first with another try from Tom B. Felstead drew level with the final play of the game. The game went to 5 mins of “golden try”; With neither team scoring, The Abbey were deemed the winners as they scored first.
In our group of 4 we came third on points difference, winning the Shield. A great day, and congratulations to all players!
The Abbey U11 A Girls’ Hockey Team went to play in The Brandeston Hall Hockey Tournament on Wednesday 1 October and WON! This is the second year in a row that The Abbey girls have brought back the Trophy. 16 schools took part in the Tournament.
In their group the girls played:
Taverham and won 1 – 0
St Joseph’s School and won 3 – 0
Brandeston Hall and won 1 – 0
This last match in their group was nail-biting because up until the last 30 seconds the score was 0 – 0. The forwards battled hard and Clara Simpson did a superb cross to Jessica Elmer who was waiting by post to strike it in, and suddenly the girls had won their group to go into the quarter finals to play against Beeston Hall.
They won this match and then the semi-finals to go through to the finals against Ipswich School.
In the finals the defence were under great pressure from Ipswich but kept the ball out. The forwards made very good shots at goal, one actually struck the post; Oh so close! We reached full time and with no goals scored went into extra time. Cries from our supporters kept the girls pressing forward , but still we couldn’t score. This meant we had to have penalty shuffles – one on one with the goal keeper.
Excitement mounted as we took our three penalty shuffles, at the end of that we were 2 – 2. We then went into sudden death, our striker ran in and scored! This left it up to Ariane Bilgen our goal keeper to keep the ball out and she did! We had won. The girls, their teachers and their supporters cheered madly.
The Deputy Head of Framlingham College presented the girls with gold medals and the trophy.
On Friday 5 September, Abbey pupils enjoyed a morning of special outdoor learning activities within the School’s beautiful and diverse grounds. The aim of the morning’s activities is to provide pupils with the opportunity for learning in the outdoor environment, using a variety of natural materials. The pupils enjoyed a number of activities including den building, leaf rainbows and whittling sticks which they then used to cook marshmallows on the camp fire.
The Abbey offers a weekly outdoor activity club each week, during which pupils can enjoy activities similar to those offered by Forest Schools. This means pupils are able to experience the wealth of natural learning that The Abbey’s grounds can offer, enjoying its extensive streams, woods and wildlife.
The Swing Band did its magnificent best to blow the clouds away – and succeeded for an hour and more as Woodbridgians, past, current and future, stiffened their upper lips and spread their tablecloths to have a picnic come what may! And it was a gloriously social and uplifting time. But come the rain did, and so we cheerfully relocated into a very cosy and beautifully dressed Dome still wearing its Ball gown from the night before. Once all were comfortable Chairman of Governors, Mr Finbow, expertly set the scene on Mr and Mrs Cole’s twenty-one years; George Cook brilliantly picked up the pace with his flute; playing the Great Train Race to much foot-tapping, awestruck watching, and great applause; I did my best to keep our emotions in check and Mr Cole did even better… right down to his magnificent last line. The standing ovation for Mr and Mrs Cole was long, heartfelt, and loud as could be; and was underscored by the breaking news to close, from Mr Finbow, of The Stephen Cole Bursary Fund.

The undefeated U12A team finished its season in style at the RHS U12A rounders tournament: the first two matches against St Alban’s and Farlingaye were very convincing wins (12-2 and 12½-4) and perfect preparation for the altogether more challenging game against the hosts. 6-4 sufficed! That in turn proved precursor to the semi-finals – RHS again; victory again: 6½-4 this time. The final against Ipswich High could not have been closer… it was a tie: 11½ each, with thrilling hitting and exceptional catching throughout.
Harriet P and Amy G (wonderful hitting), Sarah B and Freya H (clever match play) led the way, inspiring a brilliant team performance from all at the tournament.
Many, many congratulations to our athletes who ended their Abbey sporting careers on a high at the Nationals at Birmingham on 2 July. Well done to Ianthe H who came 7th in Long Jump, Annabel Y 3rd in Discus, Daniel N who became the Boys’ National Champion at Javelin and Sophie G who became the Girls’ National Champion at Javelin, setting a new national record.
