On a freezing day in late January with driving snow at Forrest Edge Equestrian Centre near Swaffham, the younger team of Woodbridge riders excelled to win the NSEA Country Dressage Championship Qualifier from King’s Ely School by just 0.064 of a mark!

Led ably by top scorer Sasha Reid (9 yrs) on Harry, the team of Sasha, Perdi Ludgrove (12), Alex Ryder-Davies (13) and Lily Waterer (12) were duly crowned the NSEA Suffolk Champions.

They now join two jumping teams from Woodbridge who qualified late last year to go to the NSEA County Championships at Bury Farm International Arena in Bedfordshire on 20^th April 2018.

The other team of Tabby Wilson-Smith, Oliver Reid, Olivia Brown and Ada Marson were fourth, still only 1.282 marks behind their team mates.

A few of the riders competed in the warm-up class with good results: Sasha won, just ahead of her brother Oliver Reid in third and Ada Marson in sixth.

Many congratulations to all the riders on their successes under such testing conditions.

‘On Sunday 21 January, thirteen teammates and I competed in the annual RAF Competition held at RAF Honington. I’m very pleased to say that we achieved 8^th place in the overall standings of the competition and most notably 1^st place in the Drill section of the competition and 2^nd place in the fitness section. I accredit this outstanding performance to the hard work, dedication and resilience of the entire team throughout the weeks of training leading up to the competition. I am extremely proud to have been part of such a committed team. I wish next year’s cadets the best of luck, and hope they can continue to build on the fine reputation of the Woodbridge School RAF section.’

NETBALL U16A V EAST BERGHOLT
Score: Won 17-9

On a freezing afternoon the U16A netballers travelled to East Bergholt to take on a strong side full of club players. Undaunted, the girls made a great start with some fantastic passing from Sarah Barker (centre) and player of the match Amy Graham, and fine shooting from Tess Lye and Joanne Garnett. 6-0 up at quarter time! Aiming to maintain momentum, the team target was another 6 by half time, but East Bergholt were not to be so compliant. Strong defence by Tash Doole, Katie Bye and Maud Peel, and canny play elsewhere did well to limit the opposition fight-back and half time came with the score at 11-5. Lucy Hudson and Milly Buckingham came on for the second half and quickly made an impact, helping to ease out the lead to 17-9 by the end for a convincing and impressive victory.

NETBALL U15A v NORTHGATE (LEAGUE)
SCORE: Won 35-23

For their first competitive match of the term, a slightly new look U15A squad played against Northgate at home. Northgate are never a team to be underestimated and have a number of talented players in their side. After a good warm-up Woodbridge started the game at pace with some fast moving attacking play and some excellent feeding into the circle from Victoria Burrows which was then successfully converted by Saffron Holliday and Nell Pilkington, both players moving well in the shooting circle. In defence Flora Pitt, Libby Martin and Amber Harrell kept Northgate’s attack and tall shooters under pressure and never allowed them to have the impact that they potentially could. At quarter time Woodbridge led by 11-9.

The 2nd quarter saw a slightly shaky start by Woodbridge which allowed Northgate to come back into the game a little, but what was pleasing to see was how the squad reacted to this. They steadied the game down initially to regain control, applied pressure which led to a number of interceptions and then re-introduced the excellent attacking play from out of defence through to attack which had been so successful in the 1st quarter. Their play really started to flow and by half time they had a sound lead of 21-14.

The 3rd & 4th quarters continued well with numerous interceptions from Laura Golding at WD and Flora Pitt at GD. Sophie Graham kept control of the mid-court both attacking and defending effectively at Centre. Final score 35-23.

This was a good first performance from a team which has great depth and versatility. A great start, let’s hope it continues.

U14B V EAST BERGHOLT
SCORE: Won 15-12

The U14B team has got off to a positive and successful start with two wins against Hadleigh and East Bergholt. Their first match against Hadleigh’s A team began with little thought for conserving energy, the first quarter flashing by to reveal a lead of 11 – 2 after some superb shooting from Ella Reynard and Joey Zhou, Joey playing competitive netball for the first time, and after only one lesson. Knowing the early pace had been unsustainable, the girls then cleverly slowed things down for the rest of the game. Controlled and accurate passing; brilliant defence from Nina Varadarajan, Myla Hart, Olivia Field and Talia Fawcett; interceptions and skilled game management from Cecily Royal-Dawson at Centre; Bea Hutchinson providing consistent ball to the shooters; and Maisy Webster, Emily Outen, and Ashleigh Wildbore did the rest. A really enjoyable first match to watch, a great win by 22 – 8, and player of the match to debutante Joey.

The second match against East Bergholt’s B team was much closer: indeed nail-biting to the end. In the lead but with only four goals in it going into the last quarter, our girls were caught out by a few inspired plays and three goals in quick succession. On the back foot … and a hint of panic. Luckily, our subs on the sideline were shouting for the girls to slow it down and cut in front to get the ball, and, when defending, to stick tight to the opposition. It worked, and we managed to pull ahead again and end the game three goal ahead. Erin Heffernan joined the team in defence and slotted in very well, and Joey played another fantastic game to win her second player of the match. 15 – 12 and an excellent start!

U12A V COPLESTON
W 41 – 0

The first league match of the season for the U12A team saw a fantastic win against Copleston. As this fixture had been rearranged, the team were so excited and ‘up for it’ as they had trained hard to ensure they came away with the result they wanted. Playing basic and simple netball (passing the ball in order down the court), enabled the girls to create space and work on their attacking play. They gelled as a team; supporting each other down the court and defending their opponents tightly. Most set pieces worked effectively; centre, backline and side-line passes, and when they didn’t go to plan, the girls worked tenaciously to intercept the ball. There was some superb shooting from Madeline Buchanan, Steph Gifford, Lara Hoffman-Leatherdale and Libbie Brightey. Even Ruby Vinton had a go at shooting in the last quarter, as our attack played in defence and vice versa. The ball was brought down the court efficiently by Ruby, Esme Ball and Chloe Macmillan and the defenders Maggie Nicholson, Ada Marson, Maggie Black and Isobel Mitchell worked tirelessly to ensure we turned over the ball in the opponents’ attacking half. A superb match to watch – well done girls!

U13B V COPLESTON

The intent and motivation in our girls to play at their very best was heightened by the result the U13As had against the same Copleston team the week before. The girls came out and moved the ball around nicely and made some brilliant interceptions at key moments. The strength of the Copleston team shone through and their accurate shooting took them out to a commanding lead by half time. However, a rousing half time talk from Lucy Hobday, U13B captain, spurred her team onto a very successful 3^rd quarter in which Isla Appleby was given many more opportunities to shoot and 5 goals were scored by Woodbridge girls in the second half. Player of the Match, as voted by Copleston, was Lucy and there were some outstanding performances from Bea Thomas, marking a tough opponent, and Helen Knight, wriggling free with some excellent dodging. A very positive start to the season from the girls, well done!

NETBALL: 1ST V IPSWICH HIGH (LEAGUE)

What an exciting and nail biting game to say the least!! This match was the U19s first league match of the season and what a game it was. From the starting whistle, the team worked tirelessly to ensure their passing was accurate and every player was cutting in front to receive the ball. The girls defended out of their skins; applying pressure on their opponents in every third of the court. At the end of the first quarter the score was 8 – 3 to Woodbridge. Ipswich High came back with a vengeance in the second half and closed the gap by scoring 7 goals to our 5. The tension was high both on and off the court, as every interception mattered and every shot, converted. Luckily, we kept our cool and ensured we played our own game.

Georgina Fulcher, Maddie Felton and Jemima Hill moved effectively and shot superbly and Chloe Outen and Daisy Pitt fed the ball brilliantly from the edge of the circle. Mollie Biddle, Georgina Warren and India Lawson’s defending was tight and they worked together to ensure the Goal Shooter was doubled marked while the Goal Attack was being kept out of the shooting circle. Our Captain Victoria Williams only played a quarter due to illness, but timed her interceptions perfectly as Goal Defence.

In the final quarter, Ipswich High fought hard and pulled back within one goal. Luckily, in the final 10 seconds of the game, Jemima Hill kept her cool and converted her shot, which took us two ahead. Phew! An excellent game, well done! We look forward to Ipswich School on Tuesday.

NETBALL: 1ST V ALDENHAM (TOURING SIDE)

A large U19 squad played a pre-season friendly against Aldenham School, Hertfordshire on Saturday 20 January at home. This game was to enable the girls to practise and apply the team tactics which had been focused on from the start of term and to try new ideas out, before the start of our league matches. We were leading 11 – 8 the first half, then unfortunately Aldenham’s two best players took over and ran the show, enabling the opposition to overtake. Although the final score was 23 – 38, it does not reflect the determination and commitment the girls gave to the game. It was a great training game – enabling the girls to play against tougher opposition. Well done to all.

JUNIOR 1ST V LANGLEY
Score: Won 6-0

The junior first team had a great first run out in a friendly fixture against Langley. The match was played in a very good spirit with both teams trying to put practice into a competitive match and develop their tactical and technical play. For Woodbridge Henry Dinwiddy dominated the midfield in the first half. Good positional play, passing and decision making saw Woodbridge create a number of chances. Both Henry and Thomas Childs played great through balls to Fazil Akyol whose leading was causing some trouble for Langley. This also created space for the midfield to run into and Henry confidently put two goals away to make it 2-0 at half time. Archie Cartwright and Oliver Doole were strong in defence and Max Hutchinson made strong tackles to stop Langley outside the D. Edward Buckingham made a great impact at left midfield and was difficult for Langley to contain. Samuel Bolus continued the good forward work up front to never let any pressure off Langley.

Early in the second half Henry completed his hat trick and the team grew in confidence with Tom Martin also starting to find more space, using his speed well to attack around the outside. A great strike forced a save but Ed Buckingham scored the sharpest of rebound goals… impressive! Toms Martin and Childs scored a goal each to make it 6 goals to Woodbridge. It wasn’t all plain sailing though and Edward Rufford in goal for Woodbridge had to be at his very best to keep the clean sheet – one he can be very proud of. A good start for the boys, with Henry player of the match just ahead of Archie and Edward Buckingham. Next awaits RHS and the U13 County Cup, both of which will be the toughest of challenges.

JUNIOR 3 V LANGLEY
Score: Won 4-0

The first fixture of the term, against Langley, saw the Junior third team play with surprising composure, putting their experience to good use. Woodbridge dominated possession during the first half, with James Holliday distributing well and stretching the play in order to create gaps in the Langley defence; he also scored the first goal of the season to take Woodbridge ahead. At the other end of the pitch James Yardy marshalled the defence well, especially when under lots of pressure in the second half when the skilful Langley team built more attacking momentum. Good support came from Malin Wijesinghe and Will Turner, who made good debuts for the team and did the job in defence and attack. Kai Hoang and Moses McBride also played their first competitive match for Woodbridge, and together with James Laxton and goalkeepers Cameron Hood and Harry Ward completed the team effort to set Archie Bacon up for his great hat trick in this game. Woodbridge took nearly every scoring chance and built up a comfortable lead which made for a calm final few minutes and a 4-0 victory. We have excellent news to report from the Suffolk County Trials for the UK Inter Counties to be held at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough in March.

Nine Woodbridge School athletes competed for Ipswich Harriers across the day and all were rewarded with top 10 finishes, making the tough December training seem all the more worthwhile! Even more impressively, five gained individual medals and six team medals. Suffolk will take eight runners in each age group to Prestwold: with those who finished in the top four already guaranteed a place, and within a day Bea subsequently included for the girls, this means that seven of our nine are already in their respective teams. Amazing!

The news does not end there: two of our Abbey Students took part in the non-Championship U11 race. James Hattan had a fine run to finish fourth in the boys’ race and Georgina Phillips also ran excellently to finish a strong ninth in the girls’ race. Nearing the other end of the age spectrum [Ed: I’m teasing you, Mr Garvie], Mr Garvie competed in the Senior Men’s race finishing 68th overall and 15th in his age category.

On Thursday 11 January, Woodbridge School hosted the Suffolk Schools’ Series B County Championships, which was also the final trial for the Anglian Schools’ race in February and the English Schools’ event in March. The weather may not have been at its best, but the athletes weren’t to be deterred despite a muddy course and difficult footing from trying their best.

Twenty five runners from The Abbey and Senior School raced, having already gained top 40 places at the Series A championships at Culford in December and there were some outstanding results. In particular, six won medals for top-three finishes and are hoping to be selected to represent Suffolk.

‘I have independently organised (not through university or via a charity), to go to Maya Universe Academy for all of July to help tutor children in English, teach them sport and help the construction team to improve the facilities of the school. The Academy, situated near Kathmandu, is for Nepalese children up to aged 15. Many, many congratulations to Archie Penn who represented Great Britain as part of the team at the 420 dinghy World Championships in Fremantle over the holidays. In very demanding conditions he and his team mate Ben Warrington did exceptionally well to finish 52nd overall– here is a picture of them in action in the Silver Fleet race on day 5. I hope to publish a more detailed report soon.

Many, many congratulations to Emily Barker who gained a distinction in the recent extremely demanding BMO paper 1. She completed three perfect solutions out of the six questions set, and 9 out of 10 for a fourth – and exceptional performance. Congratulations also to Jason Li who scored 25 marks including one perfect and one excellent response. The BMO is an invitation exam set for the best few percent of candidates from the National Mathematics Competition earlier in the year.
