Theatre in Education (TIE) delivers a powerful message, particularly in the hands of gifted actors and actresses. So it was that our Year 10s did extraordinary justice to the hard-hitting cautionary tale ‘Too Much Punch for Judy’, the distressing story of the tragic consequences of youthful excess and drink-driving. Cleverly shared out across six groups, the story was told three times through with creatively and entertainingly distinctive differences; each rendition highlighted the performing group’s particular emphasis in their interpretations, showing immaculate team work. There was a horrible inevitability to the outcome that became increasingly powerful the more groups we saw. Transitions between groups and scenes were eerily smooth and the evening passed at an intense pace. Watching Year 10 students deploying such wit, performing slick switches between character, and showing an extraordinary range of vocal emotion was astonishing; funny at first, desperate at the close, each episode played before us like the recurring nightmare voiced so powerfully by the surviving character. Congratulations one and all on an important message delivered with huge spirit and resonating force. Here at least are twenty-nine future drivers who will never be so stupid…
