Woodbridge School Celebrates Excellent Grades_ISI Report

Reports by Verity Hobday

With great team spirit and great play we won the first quarter 8:4. With a four point difference we carried on determined to win the match. With some brilliant play we continuously got the ball down to our shooters and with excellent shooting from Libby Martin we won the second quarter 15:7. With some superb defending we only conceded five goals and with some more accurate and good passes from our attackers we scored another five goals. The score in the third quarter was 20:12 to us. With the final quarter to go we continued to play brilliantly. With some more great defence we only conceded four more goals. And with lots of great play from our attackers we managed to score four more goals, winning the match 24:16.

The U14As started the match against Northgate with a strong first quarter. Many great shots and good passing down the court allowed us to finish the first quarter with a solid lead against Northgate 9-2. Great defending by all players in the second quarter stopped them from getting any goals, while allowing us to continue increasing our lead scoring 9 more goals. With a change around of positions and a reminder to stay in the channels we scored 4 more goals but they also came back fighting and scored 3 goals. We left the third quarter still out in front scoring 22-5. Going into the last quarter we were determined to play even better and we scored another 12 goals. Great delaying in the middle third and defending in the goal third meant Northgate only scored 1 goal. We finished the game with a score of 34-6.

The U12B team played a close match against a very tall RHS team. With a 4-4 score at quarter time and 5-5 at half time the two teams looked to be locked. Woodbridge then started to find the way into the attacking circle and was able to get closer to the net, winning the next quarter 7-5. Good linking play from captain Ruby Cole and Cecily Royal- Dawson at mid court helped the team to move up court effectively. Nina Varadarajan and Katie Bellhouse did well in defence and kept the RHS shooters at bay. The final quarter saw the lead increase and a win of 9-6 was the end score.

The J1 hockey team achieved a very satisfying and hard fought ‘come-back’ victory over Norwich School. Norwich are traditionally formidable opponents and their A team travelled to Woodbridge full of confidence to continue their winning ways. The young Woodbridge team put together their own team talk, proving how much they have learned so far this term, choosing the best tactics to implement during the match. After a delayed start, Norwich started the better and dominated the first half. Luckily Alfie Franklin was on top form and kept the ball out the goal time after time. Hugo Thomas was strong in defence and managed to build good counter attacks. 1 minute before the half, Norwich finally managed to break through the defences, slotting the rebound after another good save by Alfie.

Half time gave Woodbridge a chance to regroup and give themselves a talking to. From the start of the second half Woodbridge started to turn the tide. Alfie Franklin kept his resistance up at the back but now Woodbridge made attacks too. Jack Leith scored in the 4th minute to draw the teams level. A minute later some good link up play saw debutant, Tobias Juszt make it 2-1 to Woodbridge. Will Franklin scored an excellent 3rd goal for Woodbridge. Norwich didn’t lie down and scored a few minutes from full time, converting one of their many chances, this time Alfie not being able to do much about the goal. Daniel Norman continued to dominate the midfield and showed some mature captaincy during this tense period of the match, composing his players and playing a possessions game. The final whistle went; Woodbridge 3-2 victors.

Hugo Thomas played his best match of the season and was outstanding. He was just beaten to the man of the match award by Alfie Franklin who was a match winner in goal, keeping his team well and truly in the game.

The U14 Rugby squad travelled to Woodbridge Rugby Club and claimed third place in the North Suffolk Cup Round. Having not played together since December the team acquitted themselves well with a direct brand of rugby. They came unstuck by very small margins in their first two games but dominated the others. A good squad performance and enjoyed by the players and spectating parents.

  • V St Joseph’s Lost 5-0
  • V TMHS lost 10-0
  • V Alde Valley scorers Juszt, Barker x 2, Newland, Wright won 25-0
  • V Debenham Scorers Newland x 2 Wright, Mayhew won 20-5
  • V Hartismere scorers Barker, Newland, won 10-5
  • Bungay scorers Wright x 2, Newland x 2, won 20-10

This means the team are into the Suffolk Plate later next month. Mr Lubbock and Mr Graham were really impressed with the effort put in. The boys really enjoyed it too!

The U12 and 13 Rugby squads played in the Woodbridge Rugby Club pool stage of the Suffolk Cup. The U13s won 2, drew one but unfortunately lost one game in their endeavours. The U12s fared better and won their three games despite being rather rusty in both defence and attack. By topping their group they now progress to the county final stages in March. We wait to hear how the U13s will progress but this will likely be in the Suffolk Plate Finals.

EADT 'Young Ada is set to ride for national title'

Friday night and everyone’s movin’…  Thursday night too, and Wednesday, and Tuesday, not forgetting the matinee and the dress rehearsal.  Oh yes, it was like I’d never been middle aged (you’re old, Dad) and we were all back (well, some of us) in our youth, with the youth.  The youth of yesterday today.  Back to the 80s (I was more of a 78 myself…) – the energy, the teamwork, the colour and the sheer exuberance swept us along from start to finish: the Kids of Woodbridge did us proud.  But they’d never have made it to the Prom without their teachers – yes: Mr Cocker and Ms Brannigan of course (you thought I meant Miss Mayes and Mr Williams, didn’t you? Well I do, really).  Corey and Tiffany, Michael and not Tiffany, Fergal the Karate Kid and Eileen (come on, Eileen! So close, so close… I could have sung along to that one if it had made the final cut… there again… Mickey – good name, good song… 500 miles… Material World); Cindi, flirting with her audience – and not just the one on stage; the twins, the gangs, the friends and the hangers-on; the dancing – the DANCING – sensational; and of course the music, the solos (so confident, so professional), the ensembles, the choruses, the songs, and the instrumentation, without which not.

Was there a story-line?  Yes of course: Cyrano meets Grease meets Glee meets goodness knows what else… lots of boys meet lots of girls and it all ends happily ever after for all but the meanie.  Did it matter that it wasn’t Shakespeare?  Given the whooping and clapping, and the smiles on everyone’s faces I don’t suppose it did.  We were too busy enjoying the glamour and the spectacle.  Many, many congratulations to the brilliant cast, from stage-shifting chorus to leading lords and ladies; to the wonderful band hidden away in the gods, but playing like gods; to the crew back stage (over three dozen of them, pupils and staff!); and of course to the directorial powerhouse which this year additionally introduced Miss Foster as musical director and Miss Clements as dance for terrific debuts. Thank you all – and long live the 80s! You had us walking on sunshine.
