Suffolk County Cross Country Championship 2024

11 Jan 24

Last weekend saw a number of Cross Country athletes open their 2024 in style, with some incredible performances from the School’s athletes.

It’s the busiest time of year for some of our athletes, as this is the first of four races in less than a month. The County Championship is a one-off event leading to selection for UK Inter Counties in March, which in turn at U20 and Senior level leads to selection for the World Cross Country Championships. County Champs also includes an introduction to Cross Country at U11, even though they do not progress to the UK event.

Across the races, Woodbridge School athletes won six individual medals in addition to the Essex Gold from Year 13’s Henry on the Saturday which you can read more about later in this report.

Full Suffolk results from Sunday’s Cross Country Championship:

Our own athletes put on some incredible performances on Sunday, rewarded with their results. Both the U13 Girls and U13 Boys were winning teams, which means a single School beat all of the best clubs in Suffolk! An amazing achievement, well done everyone.

For the U13 Girls, this is the third year in succession that Woodbridge School has been the winning team.

Our individual medal winners:

U11G – Year 6’s Chloe – Gold
U11B – Year 6’s Archie – Silver
U13G – Year 7’s India J – Silver
U13B – Year 8’s Digby* – Gold
*Digby’s win ensures East of England selection for the elite London Mini Marathon race in April.

U13B – Year 7’s Dexter – Silver
U15G – Year 9’s Romilly* – Bronze
*Romilly also achieved team gold with her club.

Equally excellent results from others taking part:

U11G – Year 6’s Tatiana – 6th
U13G – Year 7’s Alexandra – 4th
U13G – Year 7’s Ella – 6th
U13G – Year 8’s Alice – 11th
U13G – Year 7’s India B – 13th
U13G – Year 7’s Jasmine – 18th
U13G – Year 8’s Marina – 20th
U13B – Year 7’s Otis – 4th
U13B – Year 7’s Joshua – 8th
U13B – Year 7’s Alfie – 10th
U13B – Year 7’s Oliver – 11th
U13B – Year 7’s Charlie – 14th
U13B – Year 7’s Oliver – 18th
U15G – Year 9’s Felicity – 8th
U15B – Year 10’s Jasper – 7th
U17M – Year 11’s Angus – 5th
U17M – Year 12’s Iwan – 8th

Congratulations to every athlete!

Those at U13 and above with a top six finish (India J, Alexandra, Ella, Digby, Dexter, Otis, Romilly, Angus and Henry) are guaranteed selection to represent Suffolk (or Essex) at the UK Inter Counties in Nottingham on Saturday 9 March.

Athletes in 7th and 8th (Joshua, Felicity, Jasper and Iwan) wait to hear from selectors as to whether they will also be selected, and we wish them the very best of luck!

Essex Champs on Saturday
Spare a thought for Year 13’s Henry who was due to race for England in Spain on Sunday only for the team’s flight to be cancelled, so instead, Henry raced the U20 Men at Essex Champs on Saturday. In true Henry style he took Gold and so has been selected to race UK Inter Counties, as well as winning the chance to chase Great Britain selection to compete at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade at the end of March. Congratulations Henry.
