Congratulations to Isabelle Jervis, Alice Sharratt and Erica Walkling who have been Highly Commended for their pictures on the theme of ‘Animal Magic’ submitted for this year’s competition in aid of Cancer Research UK. As well as attending a special prize-giving, their work will be exhibited in the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldbrugh on Friday 13th March, 1-5pm, 14th March, 12-5pm and on Sunday 15th March 10-4.30pm. Seven other Abbey pupils, Aidan Holliday, Clara Melrose, Joe Virr, Katie Bellhouse, Jo Dunmore, Ella Reynard and Alexander Sharratt  have also been chosen to have their work exhibited. All are welcome to attend to see their work and that of pupils from other schools in East Anglia and the designs will be available to purchase along with specially printed postcards of their art work. Really well done to these pupils and to all who took part in the competition. I was really impressed by the high standard of work and how imaginative and different all the pictures were!

On Tuesday year 5 were lucky enough to be joined by staff from BT to take part in a day long computing challenge. Throughout the day the pupils were introduced to new programming ideas that went together to create a programme to control the movement of a virtual robot. This required the pupils to think logically in order to create and debug algorithms.

The day culminated in a year group competition with teams pitting their robots against each other on order to collect coloured mines. After 16 hard fought duels it was Tom Martin and Sukey Ridge who were the eventual winners on the day. Well done to everyone involved.

Congratulations to all the Woodbridge School competitors at the Suffolk County Athletics Championships (Clubs) at Ickworth House last week. Great to see so many runners from The Abbey and Woodbridge competing on a difficult course in tough conditions. With a team silver (U13 girls) and an individual bronze (Henry Dinwiddy) as well as 14 top 10 finishes, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that we are just one school and fantastic to see us all working together. Well done all!

Thursday 4th December was a day of great excitement amongst Abbey Musicians as our term’s work and dedication culminated in the Gala Concert that evening.  Nearly the entire school was involved in the thirteen choirs and ensembles that participated, and all styles of music were covered from Renaissance consort music to Abba and from Holst to film music.  Many thanks to all the pupils and staff – it was a fantastic evening.

All the girls were on cracking good form and played their hearts out in each match. They won their section, not losing a match which meant they got through to the semi-finals.  Sadly they didn’t win that match.  They had one final match against Barnardiston to decide who came 3rd or 4th in the competition. This was a most thrilling match as when the whistle blew for full time it was a draw, 2- 2.  The game went into a golden goal period and we scored first! The girls were delighted and came away with third place medals.

Christmas at the Abbey started on 9 December when the Chapel Choir visited the Seckford Almshouses for a spot of Carol singing.  The Chapel Choir sang some of its own repertoire including works by Rutter and Godfree as well as that perennial favourite, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, and both the choir and residents enjoyed singing traditional carols together.
