Meet Avery

United States Year 9

Avery joined Woodbridge School in Year 9 from the United States, and is a keen equestrian.

What I really enjoy about boarding here is the freedom I have, I’m able to visit the town with friends, it’s a beautiful and very safe Suffolk town with cafes, restaurants, a beautiful library and some lovely shops – it’s one of my favourite things to do, and everything is right on my doorstep.

Mr Gunn, our Head of Boarding, his family and fellow boarders have all helped me settle in enormously, everyone is so supportive and Mr Gunn encourages us all to make the most of every opportunity we have as boarders here. Although it’s been a big change moving here, it really hasn’t felt difficult at all as everyone at School has made the transition so easy and comfortable.

A usual day involves breakfast together ahead of heading into the classroom to begin a day of learning. I’m dedicated to working hard on my studies, hoping to take Chemistry, Biology and Psychology at A level here at the Sixth Form after my GCSEs – I’d really like to become a trauma surgeon, or work in the medical field in some way, so it’s important I work hard and do well. I love learning about the human body and how it functions, Science and PE/Sports lessons are my favourites unsurprisingly given my interests and hopes for the future, and the resources, classrooms and teachers here are brilliant.

My family and I visited the School and quickly realised it was where I should go – in particular I was interested in the superb Equestrian opportunities, including the opportunity to train and compete with a team of riders – all at different levels of experience. They’ve had some incredible success too, I’m excited to be part of that, and I would say it was definitely one of the main reasons I chose Woodbridge above all other schools we considered.

As well as the School’s impressive and reassuring exam results, my parents were particularly keen on the feeling of being part of a community, learning together with day students, and the fact that there is no real difference or division between us, other than the fact that the boarders live in School! And it’s certainly something I can totally agree with now I’m here and part of that community.

If you’re considering boarding at Woodbridge, just come! It’s so welcoming, I have so much fun – not many people get to experience something like this and that’s really special, I know I’m going not make lots of amazing memories here, and I’m really hopeful and positive about my future too – I’m supported and guided, as well as looked after as though I’m part of a huge family!
