Woodbridge School Senior School
Housemaster Mr Pineo and his family

Life in School House

Mr & Mrs Pineo have taught in four previous independent schools around the country with three of them being in houseparent roles. Mr Pineo was Director of Sport at Ampleforth College and Housemaster at Aldenham School prior to this role. Mrs Pineo is a primary trained teacher and was Housemistress at Culford Prep School before they started their family. They have two daughters, Eva 9, and Isabelle 6 who attend Woodbridge School Prep where Mr Pineo also went to school from 1983-86. Both of their families live in Felixstowe so know the area very well and love living in such a vibrant market town. Mr Pineo still plays hockey and cricket for local clubs as well as golf as often as the weather and job allow! Mrs Pineo plays netball and Eva is following in her footsteps by playing for the same local junior club. Eva also enjoys Drama and is thrilled to have the School’s amazing theatre on our doorstep. Isabelle goes to gymnastics at the nationally renowned Pipers Vale centre in Ipswich as well as swimming at a local pool. Their lives reflect the outdoor lifestyle that the Woodbridge School environment offers. As much as they enjoy their sport clubs, they love nothing better than charging around the beautiful grounds on their go-karts, bikes and scooters or climbing the low ropes course in the woods. They love socialising with the boarder and are as much a part of this community as the pupils.

School House is a wonderful, family home for all our boarders. Being co-ed gives us the advantage of increasing the social interaction between pupils. They are able to interact and enjoy the company of people from very different backgrounds as we have pupils from fourteen nationalities. The House is built on trust and all pupils are entrusted to play a role within the community. It may be as simple as being on the food committee or a senior role as a House Prefect but everyone must play their part.

Below is a fantastic video made by one of our students which will give you a real insight into our boarders lives.

Mr & Mrs Pineo ensure that every boarder is as happy as they can be. Even under the stress of examinations, if there is something that can be done to help ease the load, whether it is a little evening chat or ensuring they exercise and get out of the House we will. In this role, there is a brilliant Assistant Housemistress, Ms Gardner and an incredible tutor team who also help to look after the boarders. Ms Gardner teaches English and lives in the building. Her passions include kayaking and swimming as well as her dog Cici! Ms Gardner also runs our unique introduction to boarding programme the week before term starts in September. This includes induction tours of Woodbridge and Ipswich as well as English lessons during the day and then fun games and activities in the evening. It is a brilliant way for the boarders to bond and form relationships before term starts.

What is a typical week for a boarder?

Equally important are the domestic team who ensure the House is immaculate everyday but who also notice the little things in rooms and corridors that help to build a picture of each child. They are led by two matrons, one during the day who oversees the medical needs of the pupils and the maintenance, laundry and cleaning of the house and an evening one who helps the boarders settle at the end of the school day. Ultimately, it is about working as a team. As a result of these efforts, each pupil broadens their experiences of school. It is a privilege to attend such a wonderful school but it is also a great opportunity to make the most of living in the community. With Woodbridge so close, everyday provides a chance for the boarders to socialise with the wider community, whether it be wandering through the town centre sampling the local produce or meeting friends at the cafes or going to the cinema. We are also perfectly located for Ipswich, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Norwich and London. As a House, we visit London every term showing them the sights of our magnificent capital. As well as major trips, we also offer local trips to climbing venues, paintball venues, swimming pools, beaches, indoor karting and escape rooms at weekends. Within House, we celebrate every birthday and most major occasions such as Chinese New Year and the Feast of Saint Nicholas as well as our own Christmas dinner and party. Overall, this experience provides each pupil with fabulous opportunities. Yes, their English will improve greatly interacting with others but they will also gain experience of the English cultures and a readiness for University.
