In PSHE the Reception children have been learning their Golden Rules. This week they are focussing on the rule “We are gentle”.  They were able to apply this rule to real life today when Freddie brought his new puppy, Luna, in for Show and Tell. Freddie was able to tell the children how to care for Luna.

Glorious weather and glorious entertainment! Everything came together perfectly on Open Day, with our pupils and staff at their charming best, and more guests than ever before with us to enjoy the buzz. Mad-cap experiments in science (all perfectly safe – but hugely entertaining); the Seckford Theatre alive with activity; the music school raising its rafters; classrooms and subjects entertaining through inspirational example; the CCF out in force to add excitement – from climbing to zipping, from paintballs to aquatics; sport in all its guises, from introductory fencing sessions to complex manoeuvres on the astro. All rounded off with a delightful afternoon tea. No wonder everyone looked so happy.

Thank you the pupils, and your parents, and the staff as well, for a great day in!

This week, as part of their topic “All About Me”, the children in Reception have been focussing on their favourite foods. They have been talking about healthy options and making plates of food using playdough. Yesterday the children had their first cookery lesson and they had great fun making blackberry muffins.

Year 1 Marina Trip

This week the children in Year 1 have been exploring water in the local environment.  We visited Woodbridge Marina and sketched a range of boats before walking along the riverside to the boating lake.   The children had lots of fun sailing the boats they had made during DT lessons on the lake.

Pupils were inspired by British rower Simon Dennis MBE at Woodbridge School Speech Day held on Saturday 17 September 2016, when he spoke of the hard work and the pressures involved in elite sport, and how his gold medal represented all the low points and tough training sessions that he overcame along the way. His speech resonated with pupils who were later recognised for their hard work and determination in GCSE and A level exams this summer.

The Reception Parents and their children enjoyed a final parent session together today – coffee and croissants!  It was a lovely end to the year and a chance for the teachers to say thank you for all their support this year.

Over the past two weeks, Year 2 have enjoyed some very exciting chemistry lessons from Mrs Hillman, head of chemistry at the senior school.  Mrs Hillman very kindly fulfilled the children’s requests for ‘potions and explosions’!  She showed them how dry ice is made and they learnt that in this instance carbon turns from a solid straight to a gas and the gas is heavier than air.  Mrs Hillman demonstrated testing for PH levels and kindly left some test tube racks in the classroom displaying the full range.  The children were delighted, evidenced by their gasps and cheers and expressions on their faces.  A big thank you to Mrs Hillman and Jo for really inspiring the next generation of scientists!

The Reception classes visited Poplar farm in Grundisburgh today. Mrs Houston talked to the children about the different crops and animals that they have on the farm and showed them examples of wheat, barley, sugar beet and rapeseed plants straight from the fields. The children took part in a variety of activities matching different foods to the plants and animals that they come from. They thoroughly enjoyed meeting Willy, the bull, and some piglets as well as looking at all the different farm machinery, including combine harvester and tractors. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Houston, Emilia’s parents, for such an enjoyable day!

This week Year 2 have enjoyed a wonderful trip to Southwold which was a fitting end to the topic on Victorian Seaside Holidays. All the pupils dressed up as Victorian children and greeted passers-by with a doffing of caps or curtsey and a’ “Good day sir, good day ma’am” much to everyone’s delight. We started off at Southwold Museum which was fascinating – full of exciting things such as mammoths’ teeth, fossils, a Victorian Doll’s House, cannon balls and Viking ship steering oars. We then walked through the churchyard, spotting WW1 and Victorian gravestones along the way, to the Sailors’ Reading Room – a delightful room full of model ships from every era. After that we headed to Gun Hill via a line-up of shiny 1930’s classic cars. We had a climb on the cannons and a delicious Victorian picnic lunch complete with our own private military aircraft display overhead! Next stop was a look around Ike’s beautiful beach hut, aptly named ‘Happy Days’, then onto the beach for a sand sculpture competition. There were some wonderful constructions complete with tunnels, moats and turrets as well as some marvellous mermaids. Finally we had a wonder along the pier and some welcome hokey-pokeys to cool us down. Many thanks to the Victorian adults, in their gorgeous gowns, who helped out!
